Montlake's Fuel Coffee to Transform into Taru, a Family-Friendly Cafe
The neighborhood montlake coffee shop, Fuel Coffee, is set for a major transformation. It will soon reopen as Taru, a new family cafe designed to cater to local families by combining quality coffee with a dedicated childrens playscape. The venture is led by local entrepreneur Filisha Shah, who lives nearby and was inspired by her own search for a welcoming space for both parents and little ones.
Inspiration and Entrepreneurial Vision
Filisha Shah explains her motivation: "I live in the neighborhood and have a little one of my own. On rainy Seattle mornings I kept wishing for a place with good coffee where she could play. So I’m making it here." Shah's personal experience and desire for a community cafe with flexible options for families laid the foundation for Taru's concept.
Changes from the Fuel Coffee Era
The shift comes after Fuel Coffee, a local coffee shop brand, was put up for sale this summer as part of an ownership transition. Other locations in the family have already found new directions, such as the transformation of the 19th Ave E Fuel shop into the art-focused Inkling Art & Cafe. Meanwhile, Ada’s Technical Books, another branch in the family, remains closed and in search of new management on 15th Ave E.
Coffee and Play: What Taru Will Offer
Taru will remain committed to serving the same Stamp Act coffee at its 2300 24th Ave E location, ensuring continuity for loyal customers. In addition to the coffee, Taru will introduce a new family food menu including snacks and beverages that appeal to both children and adults. There will be caffeine-free drinks, sparkling options, and other family-friendly bites, making it a true kids friendly cafe.
The Grove: A Built-In Childrens Playscape
Inspired by family cafes in Amsterdam, a standout feature at Taru will be “The Grove”, a custom-built wooden toddler play area integrated directly into the cafe. Designed for children aged 1 to 5, though older siblings are also welcome, this playscape will provide climbing and open-ended play in a safe environment. The aim is to create a space where parents can enjoy their coffee while children are engaged nearby.
A Nod to Montlake’s Community Spaces
Longtime residents may recall playful community features in Montlake’s history. The block once housed the Montlake Alehouse, famous for its impromptu "play pit" that became a children’s gathering spot. Decades later, the local landscape is seeing a revival of child-friendly venues, such as the nearby School of Rock music education studio and now Taru's community cafe concept. Further, the building that will house Taru previously served as the Montlake branch of the Seattle Public Library for many years, continuing a tradition of serving local youth.
Taru’s Opening Timeline and Community Details
Taru is scheduled to open in late fall at 2300 24th Ave E. For more information and updates on the launch, the community can visit tarucoffeeandplay.com.
