Strange New Worlds Season 3: Everything We Know

It’s been months in the making, but Paramount+ has finally released the official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3. The teaser trailer was released back in April, and while it left fans salivating for new adventures, now they’ve been given the goods: a full look at what to expect when Season 3 of the hit series debuts on Paramount+ July 17, 2025.

Season 2 concluded on a series cliffhanger that finds the Enterprise under a full-on attack from the Gorn, who have been staging a vicious invasion of the Federation colony world where the crew is responding to an emergency call. Several crew members and other Federation personnel are captured and held for ransom, and it’s up to Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) to either obey Starfleet orders and abandon the survivors or break orders and try to rescue them. Predictably, Pike makes the latter choice.

The official season premiere teaser, which was shown at New York City Comic-Con last October, showed a few seconds of what was to come. Most of it showed the series’ typical action-packed continuation of the cliffhanger, with a top-of-the-line interstellar battle that involved the Enterprise in pursuit of an enemy vessel being hotly pursued by the Gorn fleet. The new trailer, however, goes a bit beyond, promising not only the finale to that long-running conflict but also other new threats and new adventures for the crew.

Pike is still at the helm of the Enterprise in the new season, but while the Gorn situation may be in the process of winding down, they will not be the only villains our heroes will face this season. They will cross paths with another enemy who will also put their loyalties, mettle, and perseverance to the test. The new trailer also points to the range of storylines the new season will cover, mixing traditional Trek plots with other genres and themes. Several episodes will focus on faith and duty, while others will be more conventional in terms of Trek, being about more science-fiction focused scenarios. But don’t expect just that: there will be other episodes with other themes, such as romance, comedy, or even mystery. Paramount+ promises that fans will see episodes that cross other genres in a way that’s different from previous Trek series.

The new season will also continue to feature the main cast members from the previous seasons, as well as several recurring ones. One of the new and most prominent faces to be joining the show will be Cillian O’Sullivan as Dr. Roger Korby. The character was originally played by Michael Strong in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode “Dagger of the Mind.” In the Strange New Worlds timeline, he is a notable archaeologist who has a focus on medical archaeology and is the long-missing fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). O’Sullivan’s character will present conflicts both personal and professional with Chapel, who has been engaged to another character for some time: Spock (Ethan Peck).

The upcoming season will also introduce guest stars Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, two well-known comedians who will star in episodes of their own. The teaser trailer for the season showed those in a lighter vein, as well as the hints that were dropped in previous teasers: this season will also feature more episodes with a more adventure/action-oriented focus in episodes but will also feature episodes with other genres, including more light-hearted stories. The official trailer delivers on that as well, as it features several moments of bonding between the Enterprise crew members, dealing with various interpersonal and romantic subplots, and also the aftereffects of an ill-advised, volatile science experiment.

There is also a particularly interesting moment in the trailer that shows James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) in the captain’s chair, though it is likely to be very temporary. The reason for that is never stated, but it is more than obvious that Kirk will have some part to play in Season 3 of Strange New Worlds and that it is intended to be a time of growth and change for his character. The conversation between Pike and Kirk during that moment in the trailer makes that abundantly clear, as Pike warns Kirk about what it takes to be a Starfleet captain. “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.”

That sequence quickly gives way to what appears to be the show’s first comedy beat of the season, a running gag that involves Spock and Oswalt’s Vulcan character. After Spock demonstrates the “proper” way to execute a high five, when the Vulcan requests him to show him “down low,” Spock pulls the “too slow” bait-and-switch. The incredulous Vulcan asks, “Why would you do that?” and Spock replies, with as much emotion as he can muster, “Because you are too slow.” A seemingly throwaway line that is still remarkably funny, for a show known for having mastered the art of dry humor.

Season 3 Premiere and Release Date

The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, July 17, 2025. After that, new episodes will be released every week, every Thursday, until September 11, 2025. Season 4 has been confirmed as well and will follow the third season, but there has been no official word on its release date yet.

Strange New Worlds is one of several Trek series to receive a renewal for a second season, and it has been renewed for a third one as well, much to the delight of Trekkies old and new. The series has found a good balance between episodic storytelling, in which standalone adventures take place across the galaxy, character-driven stories in which individual character development is front and center, and, of course, good old-fashioned action sequences and visual effects.
