The Story Behind $pent Studios

Founded by Hudson Wakefield, $pent Studios has recently opened its doors on E Pike, continuing a journey rooted in thrift shopping and affordable fashion. Wakefield credits his mother for sparking his love of thrifting from a young age, accompanying her to stores and developing a passion for finding unique pieces long before fashion became his main interest.

Growth from Basement Beginnings

Originally operating underground on 12th Ave, $pent Studios shared space with concerts and DIY events. Due to a change in tenancy requirements from the landlord, the shop relocated to its new E Pike storefront—formerly a candle bar—joining the vibrant Capitol Hill retail and nightlife district near venues such as the Comet.

Approach to Affordable and Sustainable Fashion

The shop’s core philosophy centers on affordable fashion and sustainable practices. $pent Studios features bins of jackets for $10—often undercutting prices found at major thrift stores like Goodwill. Wakefield emphasizes fair pricing both for customers and for those who sell items to the shop, sourcing inventory mainly from thrift stores, estate sales, and walk-in sellers. The store features a variety of finds, from luxury brands like Gucci and Balenciaga, to $pent’s custom reworked pieces, providing a wide range for thrift shopping enthusiasts.

Custom Clothing and Creative Partnerships

Aside from curating vintage clothing, Wakefield also creates custom clothing, transforming damaged or unwanted pieces into something new. The shop’s standout item—a papier-mâché jacket—is more art than apparel and originated from a fashion show collaboration with Goodwill. Initially staged spontaneously in-store, this unorthodox event later developed into an official partnership, with Wakefield and models showcasing reworked pieces sourced from Goodwill’s inventory.

Community, Events, and Future Plans

$pent Studios is active within Capitol Hill’s local retail and vintage store community, alongside shops such as Break Away, Magpie Thrift, and others. While the new E Pike location isn’t suitable for the all-ages DIY events hosted previously, Wakefield plans to continue involvement in the community through pop-up events, meet-and-greets, and after-parties. Upcoming fashion shows include a 21-and-over event at the Comet and a collaboration with Neumos. Additionally, the shop participated in this summer’s Capitol Hill Block Party, operating a booth within the event grounds and connecting with new customers.

Looking Beyond Clothing

As $pent Studios increases its sales volume at the new location, Wakefield envisions expanding beyond fashion. He has expressed interest in bringing furniture, food, and even $pent-branded energy drinks—previously released in a limited run—into the business. Long-term plans include acquiring more real estate and further involvement in Capitol Hill events.

$pent Studios is now open at 910 E Pike. More information can be found at spentstudios.com.
