Users who depend on GitHub Copilot’s advanced AI models now face potential increased costs following a recent platform-wide announcement from GitHub’s Microsoft ownership. GitHub disclosed on Friday through a blog post that it will begin implementing “premium requests,” which introduce usage restrictions for users who choose advanced AI models beyond the basic service for specialized coding tasks.

Users who engage Copilot for “agentic” coding, which involves proactive AI code generation and multi-file modifications, will see changes due to premium request limitations. GitHub Copilot subscribers will retain unlimited access to the base AI model, which uses OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but will now encounter usage limits on newer advanced models like Anthropic’s 3.7 Sonnet.

Starting on May 5th, GitHub will impose a 300 premium requests monthly limit for standard Copilot Pro subscribers who currently pay $20 per month. Copilot Business business users, along with Copilot Enterprise enterprise clients, will encounter these limits through the allocation of 300 and 1,000 premium requests per month, respectively. The updates to Business and Enterprise tiers will take effect in the period between May 12th and May 19th.

GitHub offers choices for customers who project their premium request usage is projected to surpass these limits. Customers enrolled in the affected plans can buy extra premium requests at the rate of $0.04 per request. GitHub users have the option to upgrade to the new Copilot Pro+ plan. The Copilot Pro+ plan costs $39 monthly and provides users with 1,500 premium requests alongside “access to the best models” such as OpenAI’s GPT-4.5.

Copilot’s new pricing model for its advanced AI models emerges following Devin’s recent pricing change announcement from the previous day, which indicates a developing pattern because these sophisticated systems need extensive computational resources. The 3.7 Sonnet model from Anthropic demonstrates superior information verification capabilities, leading to more dependable code recommendation output.
