Annapurna Cafe's Upcoming Relocation on Broadway
After more than two decades serving Himalayan cuisine in Capitol Hill, beloved local spot Annapurna Cafe is gearing up for a significant move. The restaurant is taking early steps toward relocating from its current subterranean home at 1833 Broadway to a fresh, street-level space further north on Broadway Seattle.
Early Beginnings for a Major Move
Late this past summer, owners Sujan Sharma and Roshita Shrestha began filing permit paperwork to build out their new commercial condo within the Brix building, not far from their current location. The timing is strategic, with Sharma noting that they do not expect construction to commence until November of next year. "We heard that the City of Seattle is really behind for improvement approval," Sharma explained regarding the need to start the seattle permitting process early.
The Future Home: From Star Sushi to Himalayan Cuisine
The new space for Annapurna Cafe has an established history in Capitol Hill's food scene. Once the site of the Dilettante Mocha Café, and more recently leased to Star Sushi, the commercial condo was purchased by Sharma and Shrestha a few years ago. The couple is now working to convert the space into the future home of their Himalayan restaurant, continuing the tradition of diverse dining along Broadway.
Design and Renovation Plans with Catch Design Studio
Working closely with Nos Narin, design director at Catch Design Studio, Annapurna Cafe is envisioning a complete transformation of its new home. Plans are in place for a full kitchen overhaul and an interior redesign that aligns with the restaurant's identity, pending city approval. The collaboration is set to continue Capitol Hill's reputation for innovative restaurant design and thoughtful space upgrades.
A Restaurant With Deep Roots in Capitol Hill
Annapurna Cafe opened in May 2003, when Shrestha and Sharma sought to bring the flavors of Himalayan cuisine—dishes like thalis, curries, and breads—to Broadway and the neighborhood. Despite challenges during the pandemic and lengthy construction for the nearby Capitol Hill Light Rail Station, Annapurna has thrived. In 2015, the owners expanded the business by opening the Yeti Bar above the restaurant’s original lower-level space, an early instance of restaurant expansion on Capitol Hill.
What Lies Ahead for the Historic Original Building
The 1905-built Crest Building at 1833 Broadway, Annapurna's current home, has long been part of redevelopment discussions. Plans for a six-story, 50-unit mixed-use project received approval a decade ago but have stalled due to historic building landmark protections. Any future redevelopment will need to respect and preserve the structure’s historic proportions, look, and feel—an important aspect of Capitol Hill’s architectural character.
Moving Forward
The early permitting effort gives Annapurna Cafe the time to navigate Seattle’s complex improvement approval process. As Sharma and Shrestha prepare for their restaurant relocation, they continue serving their dedicated customer base from the original location.
